The Internet is GOOD, The Internet is EVIL

Journal Entry: Thu Apr 29, 2010, 6:47 AM

Hi everybody,

here is a nice discussion for you. The Internet is the greatest/worst invention of the 20th century. Let me know what you think!

:bulletwhite: The Internet is GOOD because

  • People can have fun (porn, games, dating service).
  • Data exchange is rapid (emails, file sharing).
  • We can make friends and share pictures, videos and informations easily (social networks, online communities, news groups, forums, blogs).
  • It makes business successful, offers many ways to earn money, advertisement reaches customers around the world.
  • It makes every day life easier (online shopping, online banking, job-seeking, house-hunting...).
  • Every possible information can be found, news go around the world within minutes.
  • It makes education, enlightenment and liberation for repressed and poor people possible.
  • Everybody can be famous (Youtube, DeviantART)!

:bulletblack: The Internet is EVIL because

  • It opens the floodgates to scam, trickery, viruses, spyware, phishing, slander, data abuse/theft, cyber-mobbing and spread of misinformations.
  • It supports criminal activities (child-porn/abuse, manuals for making a bomb, terror calls, incitement to murder etc.)
  • The flood of random, unmanageable, useless and superficial informations fries your brain.
  • There is no privacy protection. Someone can lose their reputaion, integrity, credibility and prestige.
  • It's addictive. You are in danger to replace the real world with a virtual world.
  • You waste your time with useless activities.

I think than nothing is really bad or good.

The only thing that makes it bad or good is the way you use it.

For example, someone can use a knife in order to eat a piece of bread or use it to kill. But this dosen't mean we should stop using knives, because some people use it with a stupid or bad way.

Exactly what I've have mentioned in the past. There will always be a negative for every 'good' thing and a positive for every 'bad' thing.

You forgot another important one at why the internet is bad, spending so much time on it, doesn't only make you become lazy and weak but reading so much on it ruins your eye sight.

Yes, that, too. But it also ruins the classical media like newspapers and magazines.

The internet itself is benign it is people who sway the odds in favor of any sort of judgment.

I agree with *MPMG in that the internet is really nothing more than another tool & everything depends on how you use it. A shovel can be used to create the most beautiful garden you've ever seen & it can also be used to murder someone. The same with a knife. It can be used to stab someone as well as be used to help sculpt a classical state that with stand centuries & inspire millions of art students.

So it's all in how it's used.

Because this was actually the reason why the Internet was invented in the first place and it still makes the biggest part in the Internet business. LOL

Actually, Internet was invented for something else not p00rnz :bucktooth:

The Internet evolved from ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network), an effort supported by the United States Department of Defense. The developers of ARPANET wanted to make communication between separate computer systems at various universities and research laboratories more convenient.

Well, i think its like you said - its good and evil. People got free will, and they use it whatever they want it. Some of us are trying to do with it, but still, its wery hard to stop evil in the net.

i have to agree with *MPMG

it's not the internet that's good or evil, it's the people who use it and abuse it.

the internet itself is just a tool

the internets are the wild west ;p
my opinion is it's what you make of it. some people get on here and behave in a way that is unacceptable in normal society, that they keep hidden. scary thought right.

I think that good sides of the Internet greatly outweight the bad ones. One can avoid the latter by following the simple rules:

Be careful. Be vary of your surroundings and of the ways you spend time. Take precautions. If one is easy to fool and distract, it doesn't matter if it happens online or off.

Why is making a bomb considered a criminal activity? If some group occupied my land and started killing us I'd like to know how to make own too. Everyone should know how to make one for survival reasons.

Lol, because if you don't have a license to make a bomb, then it's illegal. XD

i think you maid a pretty good list
but problem is, there's also much false information, which makes education worse AND a lot of people do not know what is true or false, for instance, very little people think about protecting themselves and give out all of their informations for example on facebook
they would never do that in real life- because there you think about bad people...

The internet is what you make of it. Like everything it can be used for good or bad things, but that's not specific to the internet, but a feature of everything that humans do.

To clarify my point:
# It opens the floodgates to scam, trickery, viruses, spyware, phishing, slander, data abuse/theft, cyber-mobbing and spread of misinformations.
- Similar things happen with any other form of communication. Just think of all the letters of lotteries you get which tell you you're definitely gonna win if you join their game blablabla. There are also cases of scam and trickery in everyday life, people coming to your door, pretending to be policemen, just to get into your house and steal stuff... the internet is just another possibility for those people to practice their ways. However, if you educate yourself and don't turn your brain off while browsing, you're most likely not going to fall for any of them.

# It supports criminal activities (child-porn/abuse, manuals for making a bomb, terror calls, incitement to murder etc.)
- True, it makes the distribution of information easier, regardless of the content of that information. But these activities were going on before the invention of the world wide web and will continue with or without it.

# The flood of random, unmanageable, useless and superficial informations fries your brain.
- Only if you pay attention to them and don't learn to seperate the useful from the useless. I think the mass of information available could actually strengthen the ability to distinguish between the two.

# There is no privacy protection. Someone can lose their reputaion, integrity, credibility and prestige.
- The thing is, you only have as much information about yourself out there as you put into it. The problem is not the lack of privacy, everybody knows that with todays search engines, you can find anything you want about a certain person, as long as it is out there. The problem is that despite that knowledge, people publish information on the internet that they normally would not even tell their neighbour. They don't think about the consequences of their actions and place convenince and speed above the safety of their personal data.

# It's addictive. You are in danger to replace the real world with a virtual world.
- Only if your real world doesn't have anything valuable to come back to. The internet is not more dangerous than any other thing you can get addicted on. If I wanted to split hairs (which I'm prone to) I could argue that not the internet itself is addictive, but certain activities you can practice through the internet, and even then, not everyone who practices those activities will get addicted. You are not in danger as long as you handle it in a responsible way.

# You waste your time with useless activities
- On your own choice. You can loose yourself in countless things, from good books, over sports to partying. Would you say any of these activites are bad per se?

I think the internet has potential threats, like almost any other activity humans practice, but not because of what it is, but because of the way it is used. Everyone of us has the opportunity to use it in a responsible way, to inform themselves and their children about how to stay safe on the web and what it should and shouldn't be used for. The internet itself is neither good nor bad, it is the way some people use it which makes it seem like bad things come from it. But then, good and bad are only categories we place things into so we find it easier to interact with them. It's no characteristic of something, nothing fixed, but rather lies in the eyes of the observer. But I'm getting kinda philosophical here and I'm not sure that was what you were asking ;)
I think it's something like that saying about the guns, that guns don't kill people, bullets kill people. :P j/k, people kill people using guns and bullets for it. People do things that are considered bad by other people, using the internet as one of many means for it. I hope this makes sense :D

The internet is neither and only a tool for what people chose to do with it.

In the end I think we've benefited more from it than we've lost though. It's almost always single individuals that suffer the drawbacks of it, but on the whole large groups of people benefit from being able to shop online, meet people online and so forth. Needs of the many> needs of the few.

For me the only really wrong thing about the internet is how all the nations without a proper infrastructure is left out of the happenings. It's yet another thing that widens the gap between us and the developing countries.
