I like the way it is. They could do it better, but oh well.. However amusing to see some reactions of artists... What if Kim Kardashian sobs because she couldn't get to have another million dollar wedding and what not?
I never see the front-page. Going straight to my personal page or messages. Didn't find the front page useful back in the day, and my opinion hasn't changed. There are other ways to find what I come here for.
I actually had an idea for how to sort the browsing. It would be a system that not only evaluated views or favs, but actually calculated the ratio of favs per view. In other words "people who clicked this link tended to like it". It would give exposure to newer works (and those by people who don't have many watchers), while not penalizing the popular works.
Sounds good. Just ... if you really want to get the ratio of favs per view, shouldn't you rather use the formular (number of favs)/(number of views), without squaring one? Or is it just me who is thinking too complicated or too simple?^^ (I mean, I'm not a maths genius but for me "favs per view" would pretty much equal "favs/views".) Just saying. The system does sound fair, though.
I tried that with my own gallery once, and what it ended up with were things that only had 15 views rating higher than some of the ones that had thousands of views. Those deviations are obviously not my most well liked. That formula is the happy middle ground between fave/views and just faves.
Hm, that makes sense, I guess. Thanks for explaining. Still, there returns the problem that the artists who have very few watchers and therefore very few views will have to stand back behind the ones with more watchers and more views ... But there's probably no such thing as a perfect solution.^^
Right. There's no perfect solution. What I've noticed is that popularity begets popularity. The oldest members of this site tend to be the ones on the top of any search, because they've been here forever, and every new member find the elders through searches, thus viewing, faving, and watching them - in turn pushing them up the ranking. This would at least lessen that effect.
i'm tired of dA complicating the universe, it just makes more site glitches. the fair exposure thing seems fine so far. i mean, it's been going on for quite some time now... who looks at the front page anyway? i hardly ever run searches anymore, thanks to groups now being like...private search streams for those without a premium membership.
